Out of Harm

A Self-Harm Guide

Out of Harm Toolkit

Conversation Guide

A FREE downloadable Toolkit for professionals and public to gain understanding of self-harm plus a Conversation Guide to develop a language for talking to young people about self-harm, to build confidence and lessen fear.

The aim of this project was to work closely with a group of young people to explore their experience of self-harm and the reasons for it. The young people were all collaborators in this work and involved throughout the whole process of development and editing of the Toolkit and Conversation Guide. It ran from 2016 to 2017 and is now a FREE downloadable resource for anyone to access and download.

Over the course of eight weeks, we created a calm space in which to safely hold their stories and experiences. We supported the young people to explore their feelings and experiences within the context of metaphors in stories to then process this through creative writing and art. We explored real life and mythical tales of heroism and resilience to understand how and why the young people are still here to tell their tale.

The young people have given permission for their words and their work to be shared. You can read about the background and story of Out of Harm here.

I can offer training to your organisation to support the information within the Toolkit. This includes a PowerPoint presentation and resource handouts. If this is something that interests you, then please contact me for further information.
