Mixed Media Artistry

An Introduction To

My Art & Writing

I am a mixed media artist who creates artisanal books and ephemera in the style of vintage junk journals. I have a broad range of creative writing, art and crafting skills which add a meaningful dimension to my therapeutic work.

Nina Softly is my own arts practice that developed as my years long trauma therapy drew to an end. I needed a way to express how I felt about its ending. Since then, it has continued and grown and become my daily therapeutic practice. However, I’ve always been creative and included arts and crafts in my therapeutic sessions. This is the creative work I bring to group sessions when we make small books together based on the session work and topics.

When I began making the junk journals, I discovered the world of junk journaling on Instagram and I created a page to store and catalogue my work. I have dabbled in selling books and in making bespoke books for other people.

More About Me

My skills as a storyteller, creative writer, poet and artist have an influence on whatever work I undertake. I’ve had my work in the public domain for many years in a variety of ways, these are a few examples

Poetry & Blogs

I write poetry and blog pieces, and have published articles on my work. I am a contributer to Lapidus Scotland.

I won first prize in Ayrshires’ Mental Health Arts and Film Festival Overall Poetry competition in 2019.

Journaling A Journey

I began writing this memoir as something therapeutic to do to support my own mental health whilst going through this difficult journey. However, as a professional storyteller I know that my story has the ability to help others, and there may be things I can offer, even whilst I’m sick, that can be conveyed through my stories.

Other Achievements

In 2010 I coordinated and produced The First Scottish International Symposium for Storytelling as a Healing Art which was funded by Creative Scotland and The Scottish Storytelling Centre.

I was delighted to have three of my junk journals exhibited in 2023 at The Big Art show in Paisley.

ASMR

Autonomic Sensory Meridian Processing

I enjoy the sounds and textures of paper when I’m making my junk journals; when pages are being turned and the feel and crinkle of certain papers. I film each book I make and upload it to my YouTube channel for others to enjoy and to keep a record of my work.

From Wikipedia

An autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR)[2][3][4] is a tingling sensation that usually begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia,[5] it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia[6][7] and may overlap with frisson.[8] ASMR is a subjective experience of “low-grade euphoria” characterized by “a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin.” It is most commonly triggered by specific auditory or visual stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attention control.[1][9]
